Obituary The Late John Lee Creak. By the death of the above-named gentleman another link of the past has been removed. Mr. Creak was born in Brighton, England, in the year 1824, so he had considerably exceeded the allotted span at the time of his decease, although his period of active service at the trade did not terminate until he had arrived at the ripe age of seventy years. He passed some ten years of his journeyman's career in the place of his birth, and during that time he earned the Royal Humane Society's medal for conspicuous bravery in saving lives at sea. He made up his mind in the autumn of 1854 that he would try his fortunes in Australia, and duly arrived in Adelaide in January, 1855, where he stayed until October, 1859, when he shifted to Melbourne, where he remained until his death, which occurred, after he had been afflicted with two paralytic strokes, upon 31st of August last. During Mr. Creak's residence in Adelaide he made a large number of friends, most of whom have already gone the way of all flesh. There are, however, one or two old identities, notably Mr. Lyndsey Cooper, who retained to the last strong personal friendship for the deceased gentleman. He worked upon the South Australian Register whilst in Adelaide, and, during his lengthened Melbourne career, he was employed upon the Herald and Argus. He was likewise engaged at Messrs. Sands and McDougall's, Stillwell and Knight's, McCarron, Bird and Co.'s, and Walker, May and Co's. He represented the last-named firm upon the Board of Management for many years, and also occupied a seat upon the Council of the Australasian Typographical Union for a considerable period. He was a financial member of the Melbourne Typographical Society up to the hour of his death, and his widow, whom he had made his nominee, received the maxi-mum mortality allowance from that Society.
